The best decision is an informed decision. A poor decision is a decision made out of fear. Right now in our schools fear is being created over the flu virus. Action is being taken by enforcing a vaccination called FluMist. While in theory, using artificial immunization to protect against illness is a grandiose and fantastic concept, there are important questions to ask and risks to be weighed prior to vaccinating. Both sides of the argument must be examined in order to make the best decision for you and your family.

Yes, it is true, that missing work or school due to the flu is an inconvenience. No one likes to feel ill. But let’s examine reasons why to not have the vaccine.

For starters, here is the list of side effects of FluMist: runny nose, cold-like symptoms; such as headache, cough, sore throat, tiredness/weakness, irritability, and muscle aches (does that not sound like the flu?)

FluMist does not protect 100% of individuals vaccinated. It is not a guarantee against getting the flu.
It is important to know who the vaccine in NOT safe for. Anyone with an egg allergy, children and adolescents receiving aspirin therapy, any person with a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome, people with suspected immune system problems, pregnant women, people with asthma or reactive airways disease should not get FluMist.

As FluMist is a live vaccine, individuals receiving it are to avoid anyone with a suppressed immune system or on immunosuppressives for 21 days.

Our bodies naturally develop immunity against the flu through cell mediated immunity. Vaccines work on the principal of humoral immunity, which is conducive to a chronic ongoing infection rather than immunity. By naturally acquiring the infection, one is left with permanent immunity to that specific viral strain and better versatility to respond to future different strains of the flu. Nature intends for us to generate a predominantly cell mediated response to externalize this viral infection and become immune. The drug companies intend to generate a predominately humoral response that may reduce the severity of the infection, provided that the vaccine and the bug going around are pretty identical, but at the price of internalizing the infection to a chronic state. As only three flu virus strains go into a vaccine, the vaccine must be given yearly to try to match the virus strain present at that particular year ( That is one way to ensure repeat customers, as the government and pharmaceutical companies make millions from the flu vaccines. In fact, $25 million dollars were spent to market the vaccine.

How is the mist vaccine made?
FluMist is prepared by introducing influenza viruses into eggs where they are allowed to multiply. Fluid from the eggs is processed and sucrose, phosphate and MSG are added as stabilizers. The antibiotic Gentamicin is also added during the manufacturing process.

Do vaccines really make you healthier?

A new German study released in September 2011 of 8000 unvaccinated children, ages newborn to 19 years, show that vaccinated children have at least 2 to 5 times more diseases and disorders than unvaccinated children. For more on the study, visit
Another study showed that children vaccinated with MMR or DPT+Polio were found to have 14 times more asthma and 9.4 times more eczema than non-vaccinated children. (McKeever TM, Lewis SA, Smith C).
In another study 23.1% of vaccinated children had asthma and 30% had allergies while none of the non-vaccinated children had asthma or allergies (Pearce N et al).

According to Hugh Fudenberg, MD, if an individual had five consecutive flu shots (flu shots, not FluMist) his/her chances of getting “Alzheimer’s Disease” is then times higher. The aluminum and mercury in the flu shot (also in many childhood shots) build up in the brain causing damage.

Here are some natural ways to boost your immune system and help defend against the flu:

  1. Eat right (fruits and veggies)
  2. Get plenty of rest
  3. Exercise
  4. De-stress (meditate, yoga, bubble bath)
  5. Drink plenty of water (pure water)
  6. Take supplements for vitamins and minerals that your body might not be getting.
  7. Keep your Nervous System functioning to its highest ability. (AKA see your chiropractor!)

Chiropractic care can help raise your natural resistance to disease by removing a serious interference to your proper body function. Proper communication between your brain and the rest of your body is key to excellent health. Natural resistance is the only reason why your cold “goes away” rather than lasting for two weeks, months, or your entire lifetime.
Nerve interference is caused by misaligned spinal vertebrae that interfere with your nerves causing spinal nerve stress. Chiropractors detect, locate, and correct this imbalance by giving specific, gentle chiropractic spinal adjustments. This relieves the spinal nerve stress and helps restore optimal body functioning for higher resistance to disease, which we cannot overstate, is the BEST line of defense against illness.

Now, I am not saying that Chiropractic cures all. In fact, chiropractic does not cure anything. Your body is its best doctor and self-heals when functioning properly. A properly functioning nervous system, free from interference, gives your body the best chance to fight off invading organisms.
